Earthing System

The grounding system is the part of the external lightning protection that is intended to conduct the lightning current into the earth and distribute it there. The task of grounding systems is to safely discharge currents to earth that occur in the event of short circuits to earth, double earth faults or in the event of a lightning strike. Voltage differences between any points in the system should be as small as possible to ensure the protection of people and equipment. Therefore, the principle of grounding is to provide the electrical1n systems and equipment with a uniform reference potential at all times and safely, i.e. all parts connected to the earth must be at zero potential. The execution and design of the grounding system and the associated measures must be ensured in the long term. In addition to conscientious planning, this also requires precise and intensive construction supervision during the execution phase.

A faulty grounding system poses a higher risk potential, since lightning currents are no longer conducted directly into the ground and uncontrolled flashovers can cause damage to the interior of buildings.

Potential Equalization

Equipotential bonding is a measure for increasing electrical safety. It is mainly used to protect against electric shocks and overvoltages caused by potential differences in a plant or building. To effect equipotential bonding, all metallic conductive elements in a building that could have different potentials must be conductively connected to each other. This prevents potential differences, i.e. dangerous electrical voltages, from occurring between the earth, the bodies of electrical conductive equipment (e.g. piping, radiators, etc.) or other foreign conductive parts.

Surge Protection

Overvoltage protection is the protection of electrical and electronic equipment against excessive electrical voltage. Surge protection is part of the DIN lightning protection standard VDE 0185. The installation of a lightning and surge protection system for electrical equipment represents the current state of the art and is also a required measure in the VdS guidelines. One of the main causes of critical overvoltages are lightning strikes in power and signal lines and in their vicinity.

Lighting Protection

Lightning protection provides protection against lightning strikes that occur directly to the equipment being protected. The functions of lightning protection are:

  • interception of direct lightning strikes with an air-termination system
  • safe discharge of the lightning current to earth with a discharge device
  • Distributing the lightning current in the earth by means of an earthing system.
