Grounding
The grounding system is part of the external lightning protection system, which is intended to conduct lightning currents into the ground and distribute them there. The task of grounding systems is to safely divert currents to the ground that occur in the event of ground faults, double ground faults, or lightning strikes. In doing so, voltage differences between arbitrary points of the system should be as low as possible to ensure the protection of people and equipment. Therefore, the principle of grounding is to provide electrical systems and equipment with a uniform reference potential at all times and securely, meaning that all parts connected to the ground must be at zero potential.
The execution and design of the grounding system and its associated measures must be ensured in the long term. This requires careful planning as well as precise and intensive construction supervision during the execution phase.

A faulty grounding system poses a higher risk potential because lightning currents are no longer conducted directly into the ground, and uncontrolled discharges inside buildings can cause damage.
Lightning Protection
Lightning protection provides protection against lightning strikes that occur directly on the facility to be protected. The functions of lightning protection are:
- Capturing direct strikes with a capture device
- Safely conducting the lightning current to the ground with a discharge device
- Distributing the lightning current in the ground via a grounding system

Surge Protection
Surge protection is the protection of electrical and electronic devices against excessively high electrical voltage. Surge protection is part of the DIN lightning protection standard VDE 0185.
The installation of a lightning and surge protection system for electrical installations represents the current state of technology and is also a required measure in VdS guidelines.
One of the main causes of critical surges is lightning strikes in power and signal lines and in their vicinity.
