Earthing System
The grounding system is the part of the external lightning protection that is intended to conduct the lightning current into the earth and distribute it there. The task of grounding systems is to safely discharge currents to earth that occur in the event of short circuits to earth, double earth faults, or in the case of a lightning strike. Voltage differences between any points of the installation should be kept as low as possible to ensure the protection of people and equipment. A faulty grounding system poses a higher risk potential, since lightning currents are no longer conducted directly into the ground and uncontrolled flashovers can cause damage to the interior of buildings.
